Sculptural vases styled on a console table

Five Ways to Style a Vase (Even Without Fresh Flowers)

Here's something I wish more people knew: a good vase is already decoration. You really don't need fresh flowers every week (or ever) to make it look great.

Fresh flowers are lovely, of course. But if you're not in the mood to keep buying them, here are five easy ways to style a vase that still look put together.

1. Let it stand on its own

A vase with a nice shape or a beautiful finish works like a small sculpture. Put it on a console, a coffee table, or a shelf with some space around it, and let it be the star.

2. Add one or two dried stems

Pampas grass, dried wheat, or a few bare branches in a tall vase look effortless and last for months. Keep it sparse. Fewer stems usually look more elegant than a full bunch.

3. Make a little group

Set two or three vases together in different heights but the same color family. Odd numbers tend to look best. A tall one, a medium one, and a small one will always feel balanced.

4. Pair it with a tray

Placing a vase on a tray gives it a little stage. It also makes a table feel finished, and it keeps everything tidy. Add a candle or a small bowl next to it and you've got a styled corner in a minute.

5. Move it around the house

A vase doesn't have to live in one spot. Try it on a bathroom shelf, a windowsill, or the end of your dining table. Moving things around is the cheapest way to make your home feel fresh again.

One small tip

If your vase has a narrow neck, a few thin branches will look much better than a bunch of flowers. If it's wide, a loose handful of greenery looks relaxed and natural.
